Practice nurses are qualified and registered nurses. They can help with health issues such as family planning, healthy living advice, blood pressure checks and dressings. The practice nurses run clinics for long-term health conditions such as asthma or diabetes, minor ailment clinics and carry out cervical smears.
At Southbourne Surgery we also have an Emergency Care Practitioner, Mr Ed Gardner who will triage our daily 'urgent' list, along with our prescribing/triage Nurse Hazel D'Alvarez. They will triage our 'on the day' calls and appointments, provide self-care advice and undertake some home visits.
As well as working along side the Healthcare Assistants in all of their roles, Assistant Practitioners are able to work on their own with further skills such as injections, dressings (including compression dressings), epilepsy reviews, ear checking, dopplers and the removal of stitches. They also may act as a chaperone when a patient or doctor requests one.
Healthcare Assistants and Phlebotomists - support practice nurses with their daily work and carry out tasks such as phlebotomy (drawing blood), blood pressure measurement, ECGs and new patient checks. They may act as a chaperone when a patient or doctor requests one.
